What Are Watts?

Power, measured in watts (W), essentially tells you “how much electricity a pool light consumes per hour.” In simple terms, watts reflect a light’s “power consumption”—the higher the wattage, the more electricity it uses per hour, leading to higher long-term electricity costs.

For example, a 100W pool light running for 10 hours consumes 1 kWh of electricity (1 kWh = 1000 Wh). Meanwhile, a 50W pool light would need 20 hours of continuous use to consume the same 1 kWh. This clearly shows how wattage directly affects operating costs.

Watts Do Not Equal Brightness

Many people mistakenly think “higher wattage means brighter light.” This is a common misunderstanding—especially today with LED pool lights widely available. The link between wattage and brightness has weakened significantly. Since pool lights are used long-term, higher wattage means higher electricity costs over time. This is especially important for commercial pools with long daily operating hours, where wattage choice directly impacts operational expenses.

What Are Lumens?

Lumens (lm) measure “how much light a pool light actually emits.” Simply put, lumens indicate a light’s “brightness capability”—higher lumen values mean more light output and better illumination; lower values mean less light and dimmer effects.

Unlike watts, lumens measure brightness directly and are not affected by light type. Whether you choose LED, halogen, or incandescent pool lights, if the lumen value is the same, they emit roughly the same total amount of light (ignoring minor losses).

Here’s a clearer example: A 10W LED pool light may produce 800 lm, while a 50W halogen light might also offer 800 lm. This means although the LED uses only one-fifth the power, both lights deliver similar brightness, with the LED consuming far less electricity. That’s why more people now choose LED pool lights: for the same lumens (brightness), LEDs use lower wattage and save more energy.

For pool lights, lumen value is key to lighting performance—after all, the main reason we buy pool lights is to “illuminate the pool,” whether for aesthetics or safety. However, higher lumens aren’t always better. Choose based on pool size, depth, and usage scenario (leisure, competition, or commercial). Too few lumens leave the pool poorly lit, reducing visibility and raising safety risks. Too many lumens create glare, cause light pollution, harm the swimming experience, and may even damage eyes.

Which Lights Are More Energy Efficient?

A light’s energy efficiency relates directly to both watts and lumens. We can measure this precisely using luminous efficacy, expressed in lm/W (lumens per watt). Luminous efficacy shows “how efficiently a pool light converts electricity into light.” Higher efficacy means better energy savings—more light emitted per watt of electricity consumed.

The formula is simple:
Luminous Efficacy (lm/W) = Lumens (lm) ÷ Watts (W).

For example, a 10W LED pool light with 800 lm has an efficacy of 800 lm ÷ 10 W = 80 lm/W. A 50W halogen light with 800 lm has an efficacy of 800 lm ÷ 50 W = 16 lm/W. Clearly, LED pool lights have much higher efficacy than halogen lights. This is the core reason why LEDs are more energy-efficient than traditional pool lights.

For pool lights, luminous efficacy is a crucial reference. With the same lumen (brightness) requirement, higher-efficacy lights use lower wattage and less electricity, saving significant costs over time. This is especially relevant for commercial and large pools with long daily operating hours—differences in efficacy can lead to substantial gaps in operating costs.

Currently, high-quality LED pool lights on the market achieve 80–120 lm/W. Traditional halogen lights typically offer only 15–30 lm/W. Incandescent lights are even lower, at 10–20 lm/W. That’s why traditional incandescent and halogen pool lights are gradually being replaced by LEDs—they are not only more energy-efficient but also brighter and longer-lasting.

How to Balance Watts and Lumens?

Choosing pool lights may seem complicated, but focusing on the two core parameters—watts and lumens—along with your pool specifications and usage scenario can help you avoid common pitfalls and find the right fit.

Watts measure power consumption: higher watts mean higher electricity costs. Lumens measure brightness: higher lumens mean brighter light, which is central to lighting performance. Luminous efficacy measures energy efficiency: higher efficacy means greater energy savings.
